Strontium carbonate is an important Industrial raw material

Strontium carbonate is a white, odorless, tasteless powder with Molecular Formula:SrCO3 and Molecular Weight:147.63. Being a carbonate, it is hard to dissolve in water, slightly in ammonia liquid but very soluble in ammonium chloride. The solubility is increased significantly if the water is saturated with carbon dioxide, to 1 part in 1,000. It is soluble in dilute acids. We should store it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry location. Keep tightly sealed when not in use. The CAS Registry Number is 1633-05-2.

The most common use is as an inexpensive colorant in fireworks. Strontium and its salts emit a brilliant red color in flame. Unlike other strontium salts, the carbonate salt is generally preferred because of its cost and the fact that it is not hygroscopic. Its ability to neutralize acid is also very helpful in pyrotechnics. Another similar application is in road flares.

Strontium carbonate(CAS NO: 1633-05-2) is used for electronic applications. It is used for manufacturing CTV to absorb electrons resulting from the cathode. Strontium carbonate is used to make strontium ferrite (Sr4Fe4O11). Strontium ferrite magnets are brittle, thick and strong.

Strontium ferrite magnets have high chemical and thermal reactivity, high coercive force and are inert chemically. They are not affected by high temperatures and do not react with chemical solvents. They are resistant to corrosion and can operate optimally between minus 40 Celsius to plus 250 Celsius. Strontium ferrite magnets are used in crafts, toys, loudspeakers, magnetic therapy, novelties, magnetic couplings, holding-magnet systems and electrical motors.

Strontium carbonate is used extensively in pyrotechnics. Strontium salts burn with a bright red flame and is commonly used as a colorant to impart a bright red flame to fireworks. It is able to effectively neutralize acids in chlorate based firework compositions.

Strontium carbonate based pyrotechnics devices are used in both nonmilitary and military applications. Nonmilitary applications include fireworks and warning devices. Military applications that contain strontium carbonate include marine distress signals, military flares and tracer ammunition.

Strontium carbonate, among other things, is used for manufacturing ferrite magnets that serve to extract strontium ferrite. Its main application is the production of glass for cathode ray tubes, better known as (color) television tubes. Since strontium carbonate has a relatively large atomic radius, it absorbs the X-radiation that occurs in the tubes. Through addition of SrCO3 and other compounds, the X-radiation disappears almost completely.

Strontium carbonate is also used in glazings. Pyrotechnics rely on the chromophoric salts of strontium to give flames their crimson color. In medicine, strontium was formerly used sometimes to treat schizophrenia.
